Life Outside RS
OMG!
Is that what Voort really looks like? Nope sorry kitten. I haven't looked like that,
"Not since... well, before you were born."
- Obiwan Kenobi -
At the time of this picture I was 19, circa 1986.
Here's a more current picture [1] Ehh...still not quite right try this one. [2]
OK on to brass tacks, Member Voort saBinring is properly known to (non-virtual) friends and family as Jon Stokes. Jon was born in 1966 making him roughly 10 when the original 'Star Wars' movie was released in theatres.
It depicted a fantastical world that forever changed Jon's mind and has been a guiding 'force ' (really didn't mean to make that pun but there it is) in his life ever since. In the summer 1978 got his first SW toys, Luke, Artoo Detoo, and See-Threepio, as a treat for three (out of a possible 5) A's on his report card.
Jon went out for Halloween that year dressed as Luke Skywalker in a borrowed karate ghi, and beige pants with ace bandages wrapped around his legs below the knees. In a remarkable coincidence his lightsaber was the handle from an old photographic flashgun that his father had put away in the attic. Not an actual Graflex handle, but what were the odds that he'd choose that particular object?
For his 11th birthday he got the Landspeeder, Ben Kenobi and the 'Attack on the Deathstar' board game by Milton Bradley. Also his Mom painted the birthday cake to look like the Deathstar, mixing black food coloring into white frosting to make it a proper 'Imperial grey'.
Somewhere around Thanksgiving of that year he watched the 'Star Wars Holiday Special' on television. The mental scars have not yet fully healed. I means seriously! Bea Arthur as Cantina proprietor/chanteuse? What was George smoking?
For Christmas that year Jon got the Deathstar playset, a toy which he still has 98% of today on display with many other collectibles in a room dubbed 'The Museum of Shiny Objects' which is in fact, a dis-used lavatory in the basement with a sign on the door reading "Beware of the Leopard".
In 1980 he saw ESB twice on opening day. Now age 13 Jon was yet again swept away to a galaxy of wampas, tauntauns, probe droids, and Jedi master Yoda. Already a huge Muppet fan, Jon was in awe of Frank Oz's contribution to the SW universe. Then in 1983, George Lucas yet again gave a teenage boy something to ponder late at night in the famous metal bikini.
Jon remained faithful to the holy trilogy even through the dark times (1986 thru 1996) even though many commented that his 'sad devotion to this ancient' movie was pathetic. Hey a little 'force choke action' and they aren't around complaining anymore are they?
History in RS
My presence here is an example of my short attention span. Found the RS board while following a link from a google search looking for more info on Wraith Sqaudron. I originally joined up using my more common 'nom de écran' jonny5, but quickly realized that there was a Voort shaped gap in the plots, and submitted a second application that same day. I forgot to bookmark the site, and it slipped my mind completely until about a month later when Face came looking for me at my email address.
